The FLECS System
SubConnected AB design bespoke inter array systems specifically for floating wind, solar and ocean energy.
Called FLECS – The FLoating Energy Connection System – The design uses a new generation of super dynamic lightweight Kevlar cables (<80mm 6kg per metre) with built in flexibility and strength combines with an unique patented spar hub for dry connecting multiple cables and connecting to the grid point. The super dynamic cables absorb the movement between the device and the hub and the dynamic export cable connects the hub to the grid. The system was developed for the Waves4Power WEC and deployed at Runde in 2017. The cable and spar hub are still in place and operable after 9 years in the extreme conditions at Runde Norway. The cables have undergone extreme longevity testing and simulations at RISE (Research Institute of Sweden) and Chalmers University of Technology. SubConnected are now key partners in two current HORIZON projects – VERTI GO developing a 66kV cable for FLOW and FOREST developing a 33kV cable for Ocean Energy devices.
With FLECS SubConnected offers an innovative, proven and extremely cost-efficient cable and spar hub system from design to deployment with long life and low maintenance. Marine Operations are faster and less expensive. O&M and downtime is significantly lower. Far lighter, smaller and more resilient than steel armoured cables this system is specifically designed for floating devices in harsh sea conditions. It can significantly reduce capex, opex, downtime and maintenance and help developers fund and insure projects.
These 33Kv and 66Kv cables and hubs will be available this year (2027) verified via the HORIZON projects and provide a solution to the cabling and array problems developers insurers and financiers have experienced to date.
